The participation in the public announcement 'PAC2020 - Plan for Contemporary Art' promoted by the General Directorate Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture was successful. Sweet Home is the winner of PAC 2020. The project won fourth place out of 94 projects submitted and twenty funded in the chosen line of action.
Marco Panizza and the PAC
I dreamed of winning the PAC (Contemporary Art Plan), promoted by the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity as a bet before retirement.
I wanted to commission and realise a work of contemporary art that would synthesise the substantial aspects with which I have tried to characterise the Galleria del Premio Suzzara museum in recent years: a workshop/educational space, a relational space for contemporary art along the lines begun by Dino Villani in 1948 with the Premio Suzzara. I needed an artist who would be able to tune in with our history and respond with an important project equal to an equally demanding Ministerial Announcement. I had no doubts: Umberto Cavenago.
I met him in 2011 on the occasion of the qurantasettesimo Premio Suzzara where he elaborated with Giancarlo Norese the work Ufficio di revisione antropica, a work dedicated to the "perception of the Prize, its reasons, history and identity in the Suzzara territory". In 2016, I was fascinated by the initiative he was leading with the NoPlace project: a social experiment that took place over the course of one day. An encounter exhibition built by the artists themselves who invited each other in a rhizomatic form. I succeeded in making it the forty-ninth Suzzara Prize. About six hundred artists arrived in Suzzara with the city at their disposal for their interventions. The prize for the participants was hospitality. An unforgettable experience of involving the population, which found itself directly immersed in the languages of contemporary art. How Villani returns!
Finally, commissioned by the mayor to find an idea that would put the museum in collaboration with local companies, I turned again to Umberto Cavenago for artistic experience he already had in the contemporary art/industry sector. Already in 2017 for this occasion we found a form of collaboration between artist companies and the Museum that went beyond the usual sponsorship relations: it was a new way of producing a 'common good'. Thus was born the 50th Suzzara Prize, Arte Lavoro Impresa, which is still ongoing.
Thanks to the fundamental collaboration of Valentina Varoli, an art expert, especially in photography, with a great deal of practice in the preparation of tenders in the field of contemporary art, and to former colleague Nicoletta Cadallora, attentive and precise with regard to the various bureaucratic steps, Umberto Cavenago's Sweet Home project made it to the top of the list in Italy.
We won the bet. Sweet Home will be a resource for everyone.
Off to work!
